Frank Sobil Spring Classic |

Frank Sobil Soccer Tournament Grows to Record Size “It’s neck, and neck now” laughed Will Thurber, President of the Oshawa Kicks Soccer Club, referring to the honour of the title largest soccer tournament in the province. The annual Frank Sobil Spring Classic Tournament hosted by the Oshawa Kicks and the West Niagara Tournament in Grimsby are the 2 largest tournaments in the province and it is close as to which will be larger. Both tournaments run on the first 2 weekends in May. Oshawa will host 115 girls soccer teams on May 3-4, followed by 140 boys teams on May 10-11. Teams participating this year come from across Ontario, including over 20 teams visiting from the National Capital region and 5 teams from Quebec. The tournament plays an integral part in the summer Ontario soccer schedule for teams from age 8 to 18. “As a pre-season tournament this tournament gives teams a last opportunity to hone their games before the season starts” said Oshawa Kicks Head Coach John Belzner. “It is also an important recruiting tool for Canadian university coaches” who scout the tournament for talent” continued Belzner. In 2007 the tournament was renamed the Frank Sobil Spring Classic to honour the hard work of one of the Club’s founding members, Frank Sobil who resigned in 2006 after leading the Club as President for 26 years, and serving continuously on the Club executive since the Club’s founding in 1975. This tournament represents the culmination of a years worth of planning and hard work by volunteers and Oshawa Kicks staff. “I don’t know how they do it every year.” said Thurber. “Between mid-April and mid-June we organize a 5K run, the boys rep tournament, the girls rep tournament, the Durham Elementary school championships and our own house league tournaments. In total that is over 500 teams and almost 1000 soccer games!” Schedules for the Girls Frank Sobil Spring Classic are now being posted. Rosters and game sheets are now available for downloading.
